About Movies

When I printed the movie list, several people remarked on what I had or had not seen. Well, I’ve never been particularly fond of being scared. To each his own, as the farmer said when he kissed the cow.

I don’t look for scary books either, but I can handle them better than something visual, because I can walk away from it – even for days at a time. But looking at this list reminded me of seeing scary movies when I was a little kid.

I can’t remember what the movies were, but I know that my parents often took me to movies that had loud guns in them. (This was in the middle of World War II, and lots of movies – even comedies – had shooting.) The guns frightened me, and I used to jump into my dad’s lap and hide my face. I remember doing it, but even if I didn’t, he used to remind me. He thought it was cute. (Bless him!) I even did that when the wicked witch appeared in “Snow White and the Seven ‘Dorfs.’” (Dwarves is a very difficult word for a four-year-old to pronounce.)

When the picture was re-released about ten years later, I took my little sister to see it. When the witch appeared, Sister was in my lap, hiding her face. Déjà vu. I think it was in the ’eighties when the picture was released one more time, and M.D. and I went to see it. She didn’t jump into my lap; adults view these things differently. Besides, M.D. likes scary movies.

Anyhow, I don’t go to scary movies. If I want to be scared, I can always watch the news – and I don’t even watch that as often as I used to. Maybe, if my dad was still alive…
