The “Woman’s” View

Fri., March 19, 12:10 PM

I always have reservations about the necessity of a “women’s department” at a newspaper. I get especially annoyed when the question of the week is like this one: “As a woman, what do you look for in a presidential candidate?” I wasn’t even going to answer, but then I sent the following, which, to my surprise, they published completely.

As a woman, you ask? As if women and men need different qualities in a president? I guess the reflex answer should be, “a strong wife.” [I didn’t think they’d print that part.]

Seriously, as a human being I would like to see some of the following qualities in our next president:

I’m not sure I’ll see it in my lifetime.

Well, I was glad to see my letter posted, in amongst all the other strange replies. I have to keep telling myself, this is not a scientific sample and only those who felt like replying did so. No one looked beyond the immediate, one-issue statements, like “one who is pro-life” or “one who is Christian.” There was one cute statement: “…a candidate who keeps his brain in his Northern Hemisphere rather than in his Southern Hemisphere.” One, and only one, suggested a woman candidate would be better. And the majority of them – heaven help us – want Mr. Dubya again. Aaugh!

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, we awakened to snow. UD drove me where I had to go. I told her she could use my car (because I keep mine in the garage). In return, she took it for the mandatory emissions testing, and I’m good for another couple of years… Oh, how I need the Spring!
