Rethinking the Job
Fri., December 19, 10:48 AM
As you may know, I’ve never been particularly thrilled working for Bosslawyer. Oh, he’s a nice guy, but not very ambitious, so the job just isn’t challenging. His brain doesn’t work like mine, I guess; when our former intern left, he considered asking me to work more days because he was afraid he would miss some e-mail. I told him I would check it from home and let him know if anything important came in. The one day I printed and faxed an e-mail message from home…was a day he decided not to go into the office.
There are some good things about this job. It’s close enough to home that I can check on Husband at lunchtime. I bring home about $60 any day I work, which is chump change until you realize that there’s so little work that I even have time to sit here and write about it. It’s very flexible, particularly since I really like having days off in the middle of the week. If I need extra time off, I take it; he doesn’t mind because then he doesn’t have to pay me.
What made me start hashing it over one more time is the existence of an opening in another law office, right down the block. I actually submitted a résumé, even knowing I wouldn’t get it.
Why would any other job be different?
- Well, for starters, this is not the most efficient use of my day. I’m a morning person, up at dawn, and our office opens at ten. I don’t accomplish a whole lot before I have to come in.
- For another thing, it’s not really a comfortable office, though it’s miles ahead of The Worst Job Ever. I will be cold until next May. I’m wearing winter clothing with two or three sets underneath.
- Over the course of a week, I usually don’t see anyone except Bosslawyer, Otherlawyer, and the mailman. Clients may phone a dozen times, but they seldom come in. An educated person is never bored, but I come close here.
- Other than the new copier and fax we got last year, the equipment is not up to par. We’re using the computer and printer bought from the irresponsible girl. They do the job, if you don’t want anything printed on legal size paper and if you don’t need more than 63MB of RAM.
- Money is tight, as you might expect. I think twice before ordering supplies. Bosslawyer really got behind on his payment to the temp agency when there were two of us working, and he’s still a couple of months behind. (Of course, I’m not supposed to know this. On the other hand, you don’t know who I’m talking about.) Now, if they cut him off, I’m out of a job, because as we know, this temp agency can’t place me any more.
Kind of a short entry; I’ll add the
