Friday After Thanksgiving

Fri., November 28, 03:33 PM

It was a nice Thanksgiving, much less stressful than last year. My water heater works. My stove works. My tires are good. Already I’m ahead. And my scheduling, including buffer time, worked out.

Husband, Son, and I went to M.D. and Son-in-Law’s home. I brought a roasted stuffed turkey with gravy, cranberry chutney, and apple pie. Son carried the turkey out of my house and into theirs. And he drove, so I didn’t have to worry about that.

M.D. and Son-in-Law provided the sides, including appetizers, sweet potatoes, spinach (a family favorite), mashed potatoes and corn. Everything was delicious.

I made the chutney on Sunday (while watching women’s basketball), because it’s got to have plenty of time for the flavors to blend. I made pastry dough on Monday night and put it into the refrigerator to rest. I bought the turkey on Tuesday before work. On Wednesday I took a nap in the afternoon and was up for making pies in the evening. They were definitely weird-looking pies, but they tasted great.

I could make yet another list of things for which I'm grateful, but that will be another day. Meanwhile....

Friday Five
November 28, 2003

Remember, these weekly questions are found at the Friday Five site.

  1. Do you like to shop? Why or why not?
Define shopping. To walk through a store and look at things – I usually enjoy that. To spend money – not as much. One thing I like about shopping is that it gives me a chance to walk, comfortably.
  2. What was the last thing you purchased?
That one’s easy. I bought a turkey on Tuesday morning.
  3. Do you prefer shopping online or at an actual store? Why?
I like shopping online or through a catalogue when the item is something I can’t find in a store. I’ve always appreciated that extra option. But nothing compares to being able to put your hands on things, to hold up clothing and decide whether it will fit, to see actual colors, and so forth. I hate being in a store in December.
  4. Did you get an allowance as a child? How much was it?
Allowance? I didn’t even get paid for doing chores. If my parents believed I needed money for something, they would give it to me. But I never had money of my own to spend until I began babysitting (for someone other than Sister).
  5. What was the last thing you regret purchasing?
I’m so careful – or so cheap – that I rarely buy something until I’m sure it’s what I want. The last thing I regret – and I don’t remember specifically what it was – would have been something perishable, like food that had to be discarded because the intended eater didn’t eat it. That’s what I get for being thoughtful.
