Got Out of the Box
Tue., November 25, 12:28 PM
You’re all probably tired of hearing me complain about the shorter days. I swear, I don’t remember its being this dark at four o’clock so early in November. What it means to me is that I can’t plan to do anything after work.
And of course, I’m generally annoyed because I really don’t have to work till four. If Bosslawyer wasn’t too slow to begin work before ten – or later – then I could begin and end earlier. I could, if I had to, be there by eight-thirty. Or work from home. Or, or, or.
I had decided that I wanted to buy my turkey today, Tuesday. It’s not too early to buy a fresh bird for Thursday and, at the same time, I would still have plenty of time to defrost a frozen one if I made that choice. But I can’t even get to the closer market after work.
Flash! My favorite market is open round the clock. I am up at the crack of dawn. I decided I would go before work. I reminded U.D. not to block my car when she got home. I got up, had breakfast, looked at the morning paper, and went out into the sunshine. In less than an hour, I was back with my turkey.
Thanksgiving will be at M.D.’s this year. (U.D. will celebrate with JM’s family. Son will be here with us.) I will bring a stuffed roasted bird, and she will do the sides. Oh, yes, I made the cranberry chutney on Sunday. I made the pastry dough last night, having bought pie apples on Saturday. I’m feeling quite relaxed about this year, since it couldn’t possibly be as bad last year as. Could it?
I’ll let you know.
Just an aside: I noticed that the express lane at our market says "12 items or fewer" (instead of "less," which is not correct). Makes me hopeful.
