A little late as usual. Remember, these weekly questions are found at the Friday Five site.

  1. Who is your favorite singer/musician? Why?
My favorites are noted in my profile. Anyone who loves music will have many favorites, but the one I can still listen to for hours is Frank Sinatra. Some of my reasons are that he loved the music too, and he was so very careful with the lyrics.
  2. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why?
Music is defined as patterned sound. If I listen to it, I can usually find some redeeming feature. I can’t stand any “musician” who just makes noise.
  3. If your favorite singer wasn't in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person?
It’s a moot question, y’know, he’s dead. I think that, like so many people, he had his good and bad sides, and I think I would have enjoyed his company and his philosophy.
  4. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show?
I was fortunate enough to see Frank Sinatra in concert the last time he sang in New Haven. Though he was getting older and perhaps his voice wasn’t quite as good, he still held the audience in the palm of his hand – pure magic.
Other concerts around here: we saw Engelbert Humperdinck in the mid-70’s because one of Husband’s cousins was in the orchestra. We won tickets to see a Jerry Vale concert (we had seen Jerry on our honeymoon), but he got sick and was replaced by Sergio Franchi. If I haven’t written about that, I must.
  5. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from downloading free music?
I still get most of my music from the radio. I buy fewer records now than I did when my only source of income was babysitting. Even though I consider so many entertainers overpaid, I do think that everyone who was involved in the making of a recording should be compensated – and I don’t think the major moneymaker should be the producer. You should be able to listen without paying, but a download should cost you something.
