Weekly Question

Our daily newspaper, The Connecticut Post, has a feature that runs every week in the “Woman Wise” section. (Yes, I have reservations about a section just for women’s articles, as if we don’t read news or sports or financial pages, but I do read the women’s section.) There is a new question every week, which is published Sunday through Wednesday. Readers may phone or e-mail replies, and their answers are printed in Thursday’s edition.
I often answer these questions; this column was one of the first to run my answers regularly. (If you want to write, you’ve got to find someone to publish!) On occasion, I have used these questions as the basis of Diaryland entries.
This week’s question was “What is your opinion of Hillary Clinton’s book?” I wrote and sent my answer to that on Tuesday. However, I will wait until Thursday to post it, so that I can tell you whether the paper chose to print it.
This was my reply:
It strikes me that this question is premature, inasmuch as the book came out only a week ago and not that many people have read it so far. I've just begun it myself. Maybe you don't think that one needs to read a book before voicing an opinion about it.
In general, I can tell you that I'm not reading the book for the gossip. I love biographies, and an autobiography always gives a new viewpoint. If I've learned anything from experience, it's that very few people are ALL GOOD or ALL BAD (Mother Theresa and Osama bin Laden being exceptions). I know I will learn something from this book.
Specifically, many of Hillary Clinton's experiences mirror my own because we grew up in similar times. I find myself saying "I remember that." Her experiences have paved the way for newer generations of capable women. A woman's value is more than just the man she's married to.
P.S. They printed it. At least half the answers they got consisted of “I hate her and I wouldn’t buy her rotten book.” A great comment on the intelligence level of the respondents.
