Heaven Protect Us!

Heaven protect us from idiots and do-gooders. This is not what I intended for my next entry. The newspapers intervened. Ellen Goodman is a columnist who writes for the Boston Globe and is syndicated in many other newspapers, including mine. I don’t always agree with what she writes, but her insight – particularly into women’s issues – is excellent.
Ellen called this irony; I call it tragic. Not only has a helpless person become a symbol, she is put in that position by the same people who ignored her needs for twenty years.
I’ve stated my views on abortion more than once, mentioning – among other things – that it might not be a perfect solution, but in some cases it is the best society can do.
If you hem and haw and drag your feet for five months, of course it’s too late to perform a simple abortion. No one was smart enough to figure out that the only options left would be late-term abortion (terrible!) or caesarean section, surgery that endangers the mother’s life. Do we assume that someone thought it had to go the whole nine months in order to get DNA evidence of who the rapist was? Or are they going to let her carry the child to term in the hope that neither mother nor baby will survive and the problem will be eliminated?
As U.D. pointed out, prenatal testing did exist twenty-five years ago. Such testing might have suggested that this poor soul shouldn’t have been born either.
I use the term “soul” on purpose. Before someone starts wailing about a lost soul in perdition – presuming that an embryo has a soul, which I do not presume – may I remind you that the same Almighty who created that soul will protect against anything a mere human might do to it. Get your logic straight: either God is almighty or S/he isn’t.
I am so angry. How do we convince these jacki?
