These weekly questions are found at the Friday Five site.
- Name one song you hate to admit you like.
Admitting something about music is the least of my worries. I like the Weird Al Yankovic “covers” of Madonna or Michael Jackson songs better than the originals. - Name two songs that always make you cry.
Just two? “Bring Him Home,” which I mentioned in a post about war . “America the Beautiful.”
And one strange one: “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” by Bonnie Tyler. I was just going about my usual business one morning when it came on the radio, and I burst into tears. And remembering that moment can make me cry again, even though I still don’t know why it affected me that way. - Name three songs that turn you on.
I can’t. That’s not what music is for – not if you mean what I think you mean. - Name four songs that always make you feel good.
- “Young at Heart,” by Frank Sinatra. I loved it as an adolescent, I love it now. Willie Nelson has a good recording of it too.
- “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” from “Oklahoma.” “ …the breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree…” Magic!
- “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing.” It was sung at our wedding – which became a story in itself.
- “Firefly,” as sung by Tony Bennett and Kermit The Frog. Yes, Tony had the original hit, but Kermit never fails to make me smile.
- Name five songs you couldn't ever do without.
Do you know why that’s hard? Because I have a lifetime – a long lifetime – of musical memories. Take away five, and I’ll think of five different ones.- “Young at Heart” – you already know why.
- “You’ve Got to Be Taught,” from “South Pacific.”
- “God Bless America.”
- “Oh, Mein Papa.” Y’know, that’s one that used to embarrass me, if it played when my dad was in the room. “…deep in my heart, I miss him so today…” That one still makes me cry, too.
- “Why Did I Choose You?” That’s from “The Yearling,” one of those musicals that failed as plays but include real gems. “…if I had to choose again, I would still choose you…”
