I Gotta Vote

Mon., November 4, 04:57 PM

This is one of those really depressing elections, where you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. There really are only two issues – the economy and the threat of terrorism – and no one is really exploring either of those issues. After all, you can’t make promises about interest rates or Social Security, but at the same time, you can’t take away people’s hopes – no matter how pessimistic you are.

So I’m hearing these inane announcements from the challengers, such as “the incumbent had eight years to fix it” (whatever it is), so don’t vote for him. No offers of how the challenger will fix it and, as a matter of fact, I don’t think it is necessarily “fixable.” But there’s no logic there, it’s just desperation.

The saddest race is one here with two incumbents because we lost a congressional seat. Both of the candidates have good records in Congress, but their styles and their strong points are very different. Each of their campaigns have centered around what the other didn’t do; no one has noted – I guess they can’t – that the two actually complemented each other. Can you decide whether the schoolteacher or the construction worker is more important to the community? Of course not.

Nevertheless, I’ll be out there, bright and early. Remember, people fought and died to give each of us the privilege and the obligation to vote. And never forget, your opinion is just as important as anyone else’s. Above all, if you don’t participate, you have lost the right to complain.
