There’s Nothing New Under the Sun

Of course, that’s not strictly true. But more often than not, something we consider new is really just a new form of something older. (If those young idiots who write programming schedules knew that, television might be worth more than a cursory glance.)
Some time ago, I told M.D. (also known as the Musical Daughter) that most songs repeat the idea of an earlier one. I invited her to tell me the story in her favorite songs, and I would find her an old one that said the same thing. As luck would have it, I sang one that was similar. But I couldn’t come up with the perfect one – which I knew existed, but I couldn’t remember it. But that turned out even better.
A couple of weeks later, I heard Frank Sinatra singing “We’ll Be Together Again”. Without telling her why, I suggested M.D. listen to the lyrics. After a minute she said, “Oh, my God, it’s ‘Faithfully’!” I know a lot of people think Sinatra is ancient history, but I should tell you that, at the time, Journey was still current.
Nowadays I listen to the “American Standards” station more than any other, and I almost never hear a new song there. I may hear a new recording of an old song, or the verse to a refrain I know. But I have heard just about everything they play. So it’s unusual for me to find a new favorite. I’ve been enjoying the following song, written by Diane Warren, for the past year or so, and U.D. laughs at me. So we both searched and found the lyrics.
It’s been a long road, getting from there to here.
It’s been a long time, but my time is finally near.
And I can feel the change in the wind right now. Nothing’s in my way.
And they’re not gonna hold me down no more, no they're not gonna hold me down.
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart.
I’m going where my heart will take me.
I’ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I’ve got strength of the soul. And no one’s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I’ve got faith, faith of the heart.
It’s been a long night. Trying to find my way.
Been through the darkness. Now I finally have my day.
And I will see my dream come alive at last. I will touch the sky.
And they’re not gonna hold me down no more, no they're not gonna change my mind.
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart.
I’m going where my heart will take me.
I’ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I’ve got strength of the soul. And no one’s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I’ve got faith, faith of the heart.
I’ve known the wind so cold, I’ve seen the darkest days.
But now the winds I feel, are only winds of change.
I’ve been through the fire and I’ve been through the rain.
But I’ll be fine ...
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart.
I’m going where my heart will take me.
I’ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I’ve got strength of the soul. And no one’s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I’ve got faith, faith of the heart.
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart.
I’m going where my heart will take me.
I’ve got faith to believe. I can do anything.
I’ve got strength of the soul. And no one’s gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I’ve got faith, faith of the heart.
The sentiment isn’t new. It kind of reminds me of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” If you don’t know it already, there’s no clue to why it was written or how it’s used. It is the beginning soundtrack to “Star Trek: Enterprise.” The show is of the future, but the song is of now. Nothing new??
