Goodbye, Airhead!

Patience Pays Off (I Hope)

After how many weeks of working with the Airhead, I realized that I wasn't the only one wondering where his brain was. I continued to give him general information and hands-on instruction, but I didn't think I was getting anywhere. Boss Lawyer said, "I think he's getting ready to leave, and I'll wait a little," so I didn't push. Boy didn't turn up yesterday (though he did leave a message on the voice mail). Today he came in, went upstairs to get his time card signed, and came down again with the Boss Lawyer, who said "Guess what! Boy is leaving us." Gee, really?

So Boy cleaned out his desk drawer and faxed in his last time card. He was ready to leave. "Wait," I said, "open that drawer again." He did. "Do you see anything in there that you don't recognize? Maybe you should find out what it is." What it was, was a birthday present for him. I should have left it there till he was gone and taken it back. But I keep thinking, maybe someday he'll start to notice the things around him. It won't be in a law office.

And don't you know, Boss Lawyer had another one - a young lady this time - all lined up. She interviewed this afternoon and will start Tuesday. That's three in nine months. If he doesn't find somebody halfway decent, I may never feel I can leave.
