Father's Day

[This being without a computer of my own is downright unhealthy. I may have to go back to pen and paper!]

Tomorrow is Father's Day, and everyone is asking for remembrances about fathers. The question for the week in the newspaper was "what was the most important thing your father taught you?"

Every day I'm reminded of something he taught me. One of the most important was a sense of curiosity about how things work. I often wish he could have seen home computers. He loved to read and he loved to learn, and he would have been fascinated.

But when I remember the most important lesson, I think of how I once asked him, how does a child ever pay back parents for all they've done. To him the answer was simple: you do the same for your own children. In fact, whenever someone does you a favor you can't repay, you pass it on.

He's been gone more than twenty years; we all still miss him. But we remember him all the time, especially by passing along what he taught us.
