Eye Doctor

A year ago I wrote about some difficulties with my eyes. I know my eyes are getting older, and I just have to be glad that they still work. I’ve been coping with this problem pretty well – my solution to the crossword puzzles works fine – until just a few months ago. Did you ever hear that joke, “…my eyeglass prescription ran out and now I can’t see”? It was like that. I could still use my long-range glasses, but I absolutely could not focus through either pair of reading glasses. I went back to my hand magnifier; when I couldn’t find it right away, I was so frustrated I wept.I finally bought myself a package of magnifying eyeglasses, the kind I’ve always told Husband he shouldn’t use. They’re not perfect, but I can read something wider than a newspaper column without having to move around the hand magnifier. I put one pair in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, one at the office, and one in my purse.
But this isn’t right. I’ve come to the conclusion that some of my medications may be affecting my sight, and I made a new appointment with the eye doctor, even though I’m not due for another exam until January.
Well, there’s no structural damage or anything like that. My vision has changed, and I’ve got an entirely new prescription. In addition, he gave me an assortment of eye drops and lubricants, saying that sometimes medication can affect the quality of one’s tears. I never thought of that. I knew I needed a professional opinion. I’m glad I went.
Julia Child. I’m crushed. Yes, I knew she was over ninety. Yes, she had a long and productive life, and she was perky whenever we saw her. And she died in her sleep, which is a blessing.
I seldom tried to make any of her recipes, but she taught me techniques. I watched her make croissants, and I made Danish pastries. I don’t think I could have done it without her. I’ll miss her.
