Watching and Waiting
Fri., August 27, 01:40 PM
So far, Husband has been progressing, albeit slowly. On Wednesday he was very chipper. When someone came from Pastoral Care to say a prayer for him, he even remembered to say, “Thank you, I feel better.”
Yesterday (Thursday) he was wearing an oxygen mask again. Evidently, without the respirator to help him, he doesn’t breathe as deeply, and his carbon dioxide was elevated again. This COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is all the result of fifty years or so of smoking.
I talked to him and got very little feedback. I pointed out that I had had a long day, I was tired, and I had come to see him anyhow. He told me to go home. I did stay long enough to talk to the doctors, but we did go home fairly soon. Sometimes you wonder if it’s worth the trouble.
The nurses say he’s been moved to a less critical area, and he’ll probably take a day to acclimate to that. (I can’t help but wonder – the nursing is excellent but I’m getting paranoid – if he’s really a little better or if they need the bed for someone sicker.) Daughter and I will go over to see him, and I’ll let you know how he is.
Once more, thank you for all the moral support.
