Didn't I Say That?

Our newspaper’s question of the week concerns whether or not cable companies should limit profanity and sexual content to make them more family friendly. The answer, of course, is no.

Eliminating offensive material from the television will not protect your children from it; they will simply encounter it elsewhere. The best monitor of television content is still the parent. The most effective lesson is for the parent to tell the child, “that language or behavior is unacceptable.” The parent then explains why and demonstrates the use of the turn-off knob.

I still say, if you don’t want to parent, don’t have kids.

I thought I wrote something on this subject fairly recently, but if they’re still asking, I’m still writing. Strangely enough, they didn’t print that last line (not that I thought they would), but they did pick up the tag from my signature: Mindreading costs extra.

As usual, there was one really stupid comment: It’s all Bill Clinton’s fault. Could they possibly be referring to the media who continued to snicker about the “encounter,” long after media surveys indicated that the public was tired of it? Maybe it’s time to repeat this old chestnut, not original with me, but quite appropriate:

The Democrats do it to their secretaries,
but the Republicans do it to the country.

Sometimes people just irritate me.
