I Love the Spring

Fri., April 21, 06:02 PM

Ah, it was beautiful yesterday! The nicest day we’ve had this year. I wore a dress and sandals to go for my semi-annual mammogram and visit with the radiologist.

It was good, even if there is always a lot of walking associated with this task. U.D. drove me; she agreed that’s a long walk. The films were clear, and the doctor says I need see her only once a year. She will, however, check with my primary regarding this constant lack of energy. She thinks there might be a clue in my last blood work, but I’m not sure if that’s a cause or effect.

If I can’t walk as much as I used to, if the stairs are becoming a difficulty, if formerly easy tasks have become harder, I exercise less. But my appetite hasn’t decreased. Maybe I’ve reached the weight where I’m just too heavy to drag myself around. So my weight, which was stable for more than seven years, has begun to rise. When you find yourself in a vicious circle, you have to do something – anything – to break the cycle.

I’ve signed up for one of those weight-loss programs where the food is portioned out for you, so all you have do is eat it. If I can just get a jump-start on myself, I should be able to identify cause and effect. And, of course, if it works… you’ll be the first to know.

Today was nice enough, though considerably cooler than yesterday. I went to the pharmacy and did a short run at the supermarket. Now my knee hurts, of course; maybe it’s going to rain. April is so fickle that it always reminds me of the song, “April in Paris.”

A traveler returning from Paris complained to Vernon Duke, one of the songwriters, that the city just didn’t measure up to his expectations, which he had based on the song. Paris had been cold and rainy (no better than New York in April). Duke replied, “yes, I know. We used April because it fit the melody better, but we were really talking about May.”

You may be aware that China’s head of state, President Hu, is visiting the United States. In honor of his arrival to speak at Yale, WQUN’s Morning Show played Abbott and Costello’s comedy skit, “Who’s on First?” It was funny, funny enough that I thought I’d tell it to Husband.

Well, I have to set the stage first. Even though he listens to news radio all day long, he may not have actually heard the news. And despite spending a couple of hours reading the paper (he never learned to scan and skip), he may not remember what he read.

So I began by reminding him that President Hu was in the U.S. “Who?” I tried again. He’s not getting it. “Who?” By this time I had just about lost it; it was funnier than Abbot and Costello. I was laughing by the time I told him. Yep, he got the joke, and he laughed too. It wasn’t a total loss.
