A Little More About Our Bike
Wed., August 1, 12:24 PM
I am fascinated to see what kind of response I got to the post about our new three-wheeled bike. We learn.
Husband decided to try it yesterday. I brought it out of the garage for him, helped him get on, showed him where the brake was. “When was the last time you tried this?” I asked. “Never!” was the response. I thought as much. I thought back to our family portrait, when the photographer told him to “straddle the seat like a bicycle.” Husband just couldn't understand that; he sat on it, um, sidesaddle?
Anyhow, I helped him a little, but he couldn't seem to get the hang of it, like keeping your feet on the pedals. U.D. led him down the street a little and realized that he can't push with his left foot. Well, we're not going to scold him, but, y'know, he never did the exercises the therapists gave him, and he will never see the cause and effect here.
Meanwhile, I have to give U.D. credit; this absolutely unathletic woman is really trying. She got up and dressed early this morning and rode nine blocks before breakfast, building up her stamina. I think she's beginning to enjoy it. On days when she doesn't have errands after work, she will be riding it to the office.
I rode it a couple of blocks myself today. Just a couple this time. I wanted to put the car in the garage in such a way that we could get the bike more easily. I rode it out of the garage, over the roots in the driveway, and off I went. It's interesting to note that, although U.D. is a good six inches taller than I — and the bike was adjusted for her — it's really not too high for me. My legs are still almost as long as hers; I guess all the height I've lost is in my spine.
