Veterans Day -- and Other Stuff
Sun., November 11, 04:20 PM
Today is Veterans Day. When I was a child, it was still called Armistice Day. Do you read the fillers the newspapers run, such as “Today in History”? If I don't see it in the paper, I rely on an online version. Somehow, they all dropped the ball today.
First I noticed that there was no mention of November 11, 1982 — the day the Viet Nam War Memorial was dedicated. We heard all about it on “CBS Sunday Morning”; Charles Osgood wouldn't let us down.
Then I realized that there was no mention of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. They called it Armistice Day because this was supposed to be “the War to End All Wars.” It took a few more wars before anyone seemed to realize that there were a lot more veterans.
Where in the newspapers did I see proper respect for our veterans? In the comics! If you are interested, go and look at Cathy, For Better or For Worse, or Red and Rover.
those who fought for our country!
In other news, it is also the first wedding anniversary for my daughter-in-law and son. Nothing like an anniversary weekend in San Francisco, even if they have to work.
Just an aside: the fact that we have oxygen in the house (for Husband) means rethinking a lot of things we always do, such as lighting candles. I love candles, but I have no intention of exploding my Cheesebox. I have already bought an electric Yahrzeit candle, but I need a Hanukkah menorah. No one can have Hanukkah without a menorah; remember this. (It's the second part of the entry.) I looked at catalogues, and I looked online, only to find the following caveat: “Remember, these electric menorahs are for display only and do not fulfill the commandment for kindling the Hanukkah lights…” Excuse me; these are extenuating circumstances! I found the same item, same price, at another source without the warning. Ya think I wasn 't irritated enough already?
