It Really Felt Good

Wed., November 14, 10:41 AM

Ooh, that was glorious! My knee is achy, and I'm still a little chilled, but it was still wonderful. I was out on the bike only for about fifteen minutes, but it was the first time in a couple of weeks. Inclement weather is always a factor, of course, but I discovered another constraint to my going out.

Husband, for all his feigned innocence, had been able to figure out when I wouldn't be around. That was when he was doing things he shouldn't do, such as making extra snacks, stashing away paper towels (don't ask!), and — going down into the cellar. It's bad enough that he's wandering around the house without his oxygen, but it's downright dangerous for him to be in the cellar. All I need is to come home and find him on the floor at the bottom of the stairs!

U.D. and I have gotten into the habit of securing the cellar door from the other side whenever we both have to be out at the same time — grocery shopping, for example. Nevertheless, it's very scary to think we have an almost-eighty-year-old toddler in the house.

Today is the first try at a new venture: Husband is spending the day — at least a few hours — at an adult day care center. I can go in and out, upstairs and down, without having to worry about what he's doing. I don't have to worry about making him lunch. I could even go out on the bike again.

I find the bike very important because, whenever I ride, my blood sugar is under better control. There is no doubt about it, and I have heard it from other diabetics. Exercise may not take off any weight — it seldom does — but it definitely affects your sugar in a positive way. Since I am not driving, I can't drive to a store and walk around for an hour.

I was wearing a sweat shirt under a hoodie, which was almost enough to keep me warm; however, this may be the warmest day we'll have until March. So I'm thinking a sweater, because acrylic traps a lot of warmth, and tights under my jeans. I had better keep gloves handy. If necessary, a scarf over my hood. (I like to wear my white hoodie when I ride because it is so very visible.)

This is not news, nor will it provoke any kind of deep thought. But, boy, do I feel good!
