It Was Supposed to Be a Free Day

Tue., January 8, 01:46 PM

There’a an old saying: if you want to hear God laugh, make plans. S/He must have had a wonderful time today. The plans weren’t big, you understand. But it is a clear, mild day, and Husband goes to “day care.” I can do a lot with this…can’t I?

How does a “free day” begin? I got up at six-thirty, started a pot of coffee, and tackled whatever was left of last night’s dirty dishes. Then I poured a glass of juice for Husband and brought him his first pill of the day.

The van will be here at nine to take Husband to day care, so I have to get him up early. He needs a nebulizer treatment, his morning medications, and his oatmeal before he gets dressed. In between, I awaken U.D. and make sure she gets out to the office. Believe me, the morning rush — like sending the kids off to school — is well worth it for the free day.

By nine o’clock he is out and the day is mine, for whatever I want. Shower and shampoo! Special chores for which I don’t like to be interrupted. It’s so nice today, maybe I can clean up the yard a little.

I get a call from M.D., who just happens to be off on a weekday. I don’t get to see her too often, and we decide to get together for coffee. They will pick me up about nine-thirty, leaving me plenty of time to get ready after I send Husband on his way.

I clean up the breakfast stuff, and bring a basket of clean clothes up from the dryer. Then my nose begins to bleed. I last mentioned this problem about a year ago; it is nothing new. This time it is not a polite little drip, it’s a gusher. I can’t do anything, not even read, until it slows down. When M.D. and her husband arrive ten minutes later, it’s still streaming. I can’t go out; we make arrangements to try for lunch.

When they return, my nose has settled down — I am just a little stuffy — and off we go. It’s nice to spend time with my kid. We chat, order our lunches, and sip our coffee. The stuffiness is receding, but…oh, sh1t! I grab supplies, go into the ladies room, and start over. Very funny, very funny! I go back to the table, pack up my lunch (I’ll share it with Husband tonight), and sip ice water while they eat.

Then, of course, I have to go straight home. I shall try to do some of the paperwork that’s building up. At least I paid the current bills yesterday. But as far as actually accomplishing anything today, no way. It has nothing to do with what’s fair. I guess God is telling me, don’t do that!
