Carless

Even though I am certain I did the right thing by selling my car last summer, I missed it very much over the winter. When it’s too cold to ride a bike, too cold to go for a walk, I would have benefited from some exershopping, something that is now very hard to do. We have time constraints: U.D. works till mid-afternoon; if Husband is at day care, I need to be there when he returns home. If we go out on a day when he’s home, we can’t be out too long because he gets into mischief.
(I went out for a few hours on M.D.’s birthday; he thought U.D. was out also and locked her cat in the bathroom while he went into the cellar. Fortunately, U.D. was down there and sent him back up. Only Providence saves him from falling down the stairs.)
Anyway, when U.D. and I go out, it’s always with an eye on the clock. I quickly pick up what I need and check out. That’s not much walking time. Nevertheless, over the past couple of weeks we did manage to get to Sam’s one day and Costco a week later. Furthermore, since I simply cannot get everything I need in one quick pass, I had an order delivered by Peapod as well. It is worth it every now and then.
It’s change in the dynamic — for all of us. U.D. and I, of course, have to plan carefully and share our schedules. Husband has learned that sometimes he can’t get what he wants. “I want some … ” whatever. I reply, “We don’t have any.” When he says, “Go get some,” I just say, “I’ll just jump into my car and go out now.” Believe me, he has never lacked anything he truly needs; he’s just annoyed because I’m not jumping every time he asks.
As the weather gets warmer, U.D. will go to work with the trike, and maybe I will attempt to drive her car — very carefully. It feels a little big to me, and I don’t have the reflexes and coordination I once had. But I could probably go to the grocery store or maybe to a nearby department store… This much I will say: with the coming of spring, I feel more hopeful. Maybe some day — not this year — I will look for a small car for myself. (Y’think maybe a golf cart?)
For those who have been asking about a picture of the trike:
Isn't amazing that two people of such different heights can ride the same bike?
