More on Vaccinations and Stuff

It’s always strange when something pops up in the news when it has been on my mind. This story was in my morning paper, but I chose the LA Times version because it has a photo from the historical archives. Be thankful that nothing like that polio ward will exist again.
I continue to consider various aspects of the last post. Not only have other issues arisen, but when I looked at some of the informational sites, I was appalled. Why would one vaccinate newborns against some of those viruses? If the mother is healthy, and if she is nursing her baby…
Oh, wait. The mother very often is not healthy. Who knows what she has been doing during her pregnancy? I have had young women tell me they just don’t know how it happened, how they became pregnant. Don’t bother asking her about any risky behavior; if she remembers and if she realizes the danger, she will lie anyhow.
And nurse the baby? For me, it was a no-brainer. Of course you would nurse your baby. Many young women firmly believe that it is foolish to breastfeed a baby when you can just pick up those premixed formulas at the store. And now they’re so simple, in those plastic (of all things!) containers that reduce the need for patting away the bubbles later. Why pick up the kid any more than necessary?
From time to time I talk about the variables being too numerous for us to get straight answers. You have doctors and hospitals with the “CYA syndrome.” You have drug salesmen who want to sell their products. You have medical schools doing investigative studies funded by pharmaceutical manufacturers. We live in a society that regularly uses statistics to mislead.
Y’know what else we have? We have a society that does not teach its girls how to be mothers. How come they don’t know that breastfeeding a baby and supervising his diet is more important than play dates or driving him to soccer practice? Like so many other problems, this one has been carried over more than one generation, so that girls can’t learn from their mothers.
I hate this — all these questions and no answers at all. I have to get off this subject. There must be something better to write about.
