I Wish...
Tue., October 21, 10:20 AM
You know the old saying: “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride…” And the other one: “Be careful what you wish for.” Still we wish, for all the good it does us.
I wish that the media would concentrate on the other news instead of making the election the only thing that’s going on. I especially wish they would give less attention to the results of polls. They know those numbers affect voters’ opinions; that’s why they agreed to stop publishing exit polls. Furthermore, we know they are skewed. I can point you to links — with fairly credible backing — that show that McCain and Palin won all the debates and that the Republicans will win. I simply do not trust them. I remember Harry Truman, and I’ve read about Alf Landon.
The rest of the world goes on, but somehow not many people are listening. Connecticut lost another 2,300 jobs last month. What does that indicate? A New York metropolitan area survey insists that immigrants do not take jobs (no, good jobs are just outsourced) and that they pay more in taxes than they take in services. Um, that was always true, I think, but how many of those surveyed included undocumented immigrants?
My friend Vee, running for the state assembly, took on the challenge partly because of a local program to document illegals. As she points out, there are many drawbacks to the program, but let’s consider some advantages. When you document people, you know who they are and where they are. (Not only that, if police then encounter a person without papers, doesn’t that kind of raise a red flag?) Now, Vee and I seldom discuss politics, because we generally don’t agree. But I did point out to her that, some twenty-five years ago, when she and I were in our early forties, we were far better qualified than Ms. Bright-eyes to be second-in-command to the president. She stopped sending me Sarah testimonials after that.
I wish people who have been in the Congress for twenty years or more, with salaries and health insurance, as well as other kinds of perks, would stop telling me how fortunate all the rest of us are. I wish that they would stop talking about whether or not regulation is necessary and, instead, look into the cheating and foot-dragging that goes on in the stock market and insurance business. Look what relaxing the strict supervision did already!
Mostly, I wish the election were over and done with. We have got to figure out a way to make the process shorter!
One more thing, ahem: Have you ever wondered how come people who don’t like science fiction and absolutely “don’t believe in that cr-p” still believe the economic forecasts?
