It's Very Sad...

…but at least it ’s not happening to me.

Some four years ago — it was July 8, 2005 — I mentioned that Miss Neighbor-Next-Door had fallen again. Because she was so frail, the hospital would not release her to go home alone, and she was placed in a nursing home. For many, many months, she kept telling U.D. that she would be home soon. It is now obvious that it won’t happen.

People have been cleaning out the interior of the house, something I haven’t seen since the pipes burst three years ago.

One of those people is the caretaker she hired, whom we know quite well. The other one says she is Miss Neighbor’s niece. Well, in all the times I spoke with the old lady (Miss Neighbor’s mother), she never mentioned any grandchildren, so I don’t know where a niece came from. I suspect that she is married to the one relative we know about, a cousin, and didn’t want to explain. She was very abrupt when U.D. spoke to her.

At any rate, the caretaker has told us that Miss Neighbor is not doing very well, and I guess they are finally going to try to sell the house. Some of the furniture put out for trash pickup looks rather nice, though I don’t care to take it. Husband, on the other hand, looks it over every time he gets on or off the van to day care. He never could resist something for nothing, which is why we have so much unusable stuff in our cellar. I am just thankful that he isn’t strong enough to walk over there and take something.

I suppose it will be nice to have a neighbor there again, but I truly find this very sad. And I’m counting my blessings. Growing old, especially without family support, is really rotten.
