The Lord's Prayer

Sat., April 18, 09:59 AM

It’s hard to believe that nearly six years have passed since I began writing about religion. I happen to believe in God, but you may or may not, as you choose. Either way, I contend that we are more alike than different.

A few months after that first attempt, I wrote a little about prayer in the schools in general and the Lord’s Prayer in particular. It wasn’t until years after I learned it that I found out that nice prayer we used to say in school was actually a Christian prayer.

I have to admit I am rather proud that Rabbi Marc Gellman, who writes an weekly interfaith column called The God Squad, actually backs me up this week. To many people who have questions about religious ritual as well as about beliefs, this is an excellent source. I highly recommend it.

If you are interested, you should follow the link and read the entire column. But I would like to quote one paragraph in particular:

The Lord’s Prayer is kosher for all Abrahamic faiths, and
also consonant with my understanding of Hinduism.
Buddhism may not hold a belief in God but deeply
embraces the idea of forgiveness conveyed in
this spiritual masterpiece.

Sometimes we have insight we didn’t even know we had. We are more alike than different, and we gain the most by cherishing our similarities even as we examine our differences.
