BIRTHDAY WEEK

Thu., June 7, 10:59 AM

Like the Queen, with whom I share a birthday, I celebrate for more than one day. The nicest thing about birthdays via the internet is that they get stretched out. Greetings begin before the day, as soon as someone gets wind of coming attractions. And snail mail means that something will get there after the fact. Like this:

My Middle Daughter knows of my lifelong addiction to ice cream and has found a way to send my “drug of choice” across the country — without melting!

The U.D. had originally planned a dinner for Saturday, the second, at our favorite, Royal Palace. But the Gentleman’s kid was singing at a school concert that night. Recalibrating…   U.D. changed it to Sunday, making it early enough that a guest coming from a distance would not end up driving home in the dark. Unfortunately that guest could not make it on Sunday. Oh, well.

My sister drove up on the Saturday to take me to lunch for my birthday, just the two of us. At the Bear & Grill, the food was excellent, and I know I ate too much. That, of course is the down side of birthdays.

Royal, on Sunday, was excellent as usual. I love sharing my birthday with friends. Even more, I love introducing our friends to Royal, where the boss comes out and wishes me a happy birthday. We don’t tell them; they know. Again, although I had food to carry home, I did eat too much. I will be paying for it all week, I’m sure.

My friend Gloria phoned to wish me a happy birthday and spend an hour telling me all her troubles, at which point I mentioned that I can’t change the past, so it is no use telling her I had offered her alternatives that she won’t accept. The better call was from my son, who turned on the speaker phone so that the girls could sing “Happy Birthday.” They both sing it now, though they haven’t learned to sing together yet. Next year.
